New Message
This is a short story that I wrote. It was inspired by the movie
You've got Mail, except instead of mail it is facebook messages.
Eagerly
Anne awaited the end of class. She glanced at the clock at least 10
times in the last 5 minutes. She could not wait to get back to her room
and her computer. As soon as the professor released them she bolted from
the class and practically ran across campus. Briefly returning the
greeting of her roommate, she waited impatiently as it signed her in.
Yay! She exclaimed as it showed that it had a new message. She opened it
up and smiled as she read. Her friend, Joy, told her that she had a
special smile for when Gabriel was mentioned. All anybody had to do to
make her happy was show her a picture of Gabe. Sometimes it worked when
they just said his name. After reading the message, she opened up a new
screen and typed a message back. While she waited for him to message her
back she went through and poked her friends. Between the messages that
flew back and forth for the next two hours she started on her homework.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. She glanced at the clock and
realized that it was Joy coming to get her for supper. As they walked to
supper they talked of many things, but when they came near the dining
commons she started looking around, wondering if he was there yet. They
got trays and went through the line, but she still didn’t see him. They
came out and looked around for seats, and there he was! Her face lit up
with what Joy called her "Gabe smile"? The three of them talked of many
things throughout the course of the meal. After supper they left Joy at
the dorms and went to their special place. As they swung together on
the swings they continued laughing and talking together as they had since
they first met.

Crazy Busy
Sorry I haven't been on in a while. We are still dealing with contractors because of the broken pipe in the kitchen. 4 5 days this week I have had to get up at 8 to let them in and then deal with a fussy baby the whole time they were working because they are loud and he has a hard time sleeping. On the plus side the upstairs is done and it looks awesome! They still have some more work to to in the basement so next week will prolly be just as crazy but there is an end in sight and at least now our kitchen is not torn up. I would post a picture of our awesome kitchen floor but I can't find the camera cable under all the stuff that has been relocated to the living room. When I do I will post pics for you to see :) On top of that we are also painting all of the rooms upstairs in our house. We have been in the process for several months (i.e. we moved al the furniture in one room to the middle and left it there for 2 months) but didn't get it done because we got crazy busy with my sister's wedding and the weather was horribly hot so we couldn't leave the windows open and didn't want all the fumes to just sit around for us to breathe in.On top of all that September is one of our busiest months, it rivals Christmas for us. We have my birthday and my dads, so plenty of family parties, imediate, extended, and extended extended; a family reunion, and 3 fairs that we like to go to.
Because of all the busyness I have decided to put the Friday Fascinations party on hold for now. I don't have time to properly promote them right now so I am not getting enough people looking at all your fabulous posts. Rest assured that I will reinstate them as soon as I get a chance. I hope you will keep following me anyways!
Thank you for being the fabulous, understanding readers that you are!

Blast From the Past 6 - Modernism vs. Postmodernism

Modernism vs. Postmodernism
I should really be studying for my three midterms tomorrow but I don't want to, so I will write a note. We talked about Modernism vs. Postmodernism today in Presidents Colloquium (is that how you spell colloquium?). It was interesting but it left me with the question why. Why does it have to be one way or the other? Why can't it be both? Why do people fight over these issues so much? Not just Modernism vs. Postmodernism, but a lot of issues. There are some things that are right or wrong, but not everything is. And fighting over the things that aren't doesn't help anything.
After thinking about this all the way back to my dorm I realized that I had left my backpack at the president's house. So not only didn't I have answers, I also didn't have my backpack (which is slightly important since it has the stuff to study for my 3 midterms). So I had to walk all the way over to the president's house and back again. Thankfully I had two great friends who went with me! Well if any of this rambling meant anything to you, you are probably crazier than me :)

Today I am going to share with you one of the easiest snacks i have ever made. I found this picture on pinterest and decided to recreate it. I made it for a carry in meal at a friend's house. I chose it because I didn't have a lot of time and I needed something I could make pretty quickly. This fit that bill and it was also super yummy!

- I added a dab of peanut butter and a chocolate chip on top so that people would know they weren't just crescent rolls, this is optional, but it makes them look cute! :)
- Bake according to package directions (You can add a few minutes to the cooking time if it looks like they need it)

Illuminating Blogger Award
I got another award a couple weeks ago! CJ from Food Stories has given me for the Illuminating Blogger Award! Thank you CJ! I think your blog is such an interesting concept. Not just food but stories about food. Who doesn't have a story about food? And your awards are such a cool idea!
To see the complete rules go to Illuminating Blogger Award and check it out.
One Random Thing About Me
I am perpetually late. It drives my husband crazy because he likes to be "on time" (the quotes are because to him on time means early, if we arrive at the exact time that the event stated he thinks we are late). I have a hard time getting myself up and out of the house. I don;t know if it is because I have so much to do I don't want to leave it, or because I actually forget that I have something I need to get to and how much time I have and am completely incapable of keeping myself on track time wise (I think I may have ADHD :) or what. If I really really push myself I can sometimes make it on time, but most of the time I consider myself on time if I arrive 5 minutes late.
My 5 Nominees (in no particular order)
These blogs are way cool and you should definitely check them out! Thank you again to CJ!

Friday Fascinations 4 and 5 Feature Party!
Ok, as I said in Friday Fascinations 6 - My Week last week was crazy busy. Because of that i didn't get the features up from Friday Fascinations 4 - Pizza Grilled Cheese. Since it is now time to post the Features from Friday Fascinations 5 - Vacation Update and Water Damage I have two choices 1) Write two separate feature posts and post them both the same day or one day apart, or 2) put all the features together and have one big feature post party! The second one sounds more fun to me so that is what I am going to do. Enjoy all of these fantabulous featured posts! Of course there are even more awesome posts linked up in both parties so go over and see them. And don't forget to link up your projects in this weeks party Friday Fascinations 6 - My Week.

Blast from the Past 5 - Life is Pain
This series consists of notes that I wrote on facebook in the past.
Enjoy reading my thoughts during my college years. Please comment but

the Past Posts.

Life is Pain
"Life is pain, anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something." This is a great quote from Princess Bride. It is true, but it is not the whole truth. Life is pain, but it is also joy, love, happiness, and beautiful moments. There is a lot of bad stuff in the world, but there is also good. If someone only tells you the bad they are trying to depress you. There is good in everything. It just hasn't shown up yet, or you haven't looked for it, but it is there. God put it there. The way that you look at life affects your whole life. If you go around only looking for the bad then you will only find the bad. If you go around only looking at the good you will be annoying. But if you recognize the bad, and search for the good you will be balanced. Finding the good in everything does not mean that you have to say that everything is good, or that nothing is bad. It just means that there is some of both in every situation.
Oh and one more wise little somewhat unrelated statement. I have found that the best way to forget something is to pretend that you forgot it until you actually do.

Sorry this is late. This week has been crazy busy. I promise I will post the features from last week. I just haven't had time to do it yet. Monday was my birthday so I took the day off. It was a wonderful relaxing day of cuddling with my baby, reading, enjoying the beautiful weather, and spending time with my husband. Tuesday, and Thursday I spent working on a photo book trying to get in on a sale. Wednesday was crazy busy running errands. And today I spent all day making and canning pear puree (or sugar free pear sauce) for baby food for Little Man. And today Little Man woke with a 100 degree fever. I feel so bad for him :( So anyways it's been a busy week but I wanted to get this up for you. I don't have time to write out a whole post this time so enjoy this small glimpse into my week.
How has your week been?

Head vs. Heart
I had something deep and inspiring to say but I cannot remember what it was. So maybe if I just keep typing other things it will eventually come back to me. How are you all doing? I know I see a lot of you every day, but most often I do not get to talk to you. So how are you? How are you're classes? Anything exciting in your life? Did you have a lot of midterms?
I'm sitting here in my dorm room all alone. The people who love me are not nearby. I'm pining away for someone who'll stay. Oh I remember! It may not be deep and inspiring, actually, but here is what I was going to say.
Why can't my head and my heart just get along? Why do they have to disagree on just about everything? The main thing that I am thinking about right now is relationships. To be specific, relationships with guys. My heart says that having a romantic relationship would be fun and good, and that is what I really want. My head says that I am not ready, and in need of a relationship right now. I am in my first year of college. I know that what I want to do is finish up college and at least try to do whatever it is that I have decided that I want to do with my life. The reason this conflicts with a relationship is that I feel that dating has a purpose. That purpose is leading towards marriage. I have a feeling, and know that there is a possibility that when I get married I will have kids right away. I have already decided that when I have children I will be a stay at home mom. This would make doing what I have decided to do career wise impossible. Since I think that a 4-8 year dating or engaged relationship is a little long, now would not be the time to start one. My head knows this. My heart is still trying to convince me otherwise.

Friday Fascinations 5 - Everything Linky Party - Vacation Update and Water Damage
This week we are going to do an everything linky party. You can link up
anything that you have been working on, thinking about, writing about,

Vacation Update
So a couple weeks ago I told you that we were going on vacation for the weekend. We had an good time! We visited IKEA, Trader Joe, Whole Foods, University of Michigan, and just hung around at the hotel and in the pool. It was a very nice relaxing time. We really enjoyed walking around IKEA, one of my favorite things was the area that were set up as a small house (they had a couple that were under 500 sq ft for a whole house). These areas were really cool because even though they were tiny they managed to fit everything you would need in a home in. It was really cool. I liked this the most because we have a small house, under 1000 sq ft, and it was cool to see what we could do with our space. We had heard from a lot of people that IKEA had a lot of things for really good prices. We found that the prices at IKEA were actually quite a bit above what we usually pay. We buy second hand at garage sale and Good Will half off sales. If you are comparing IKEA to other store prices you probably are getting a good price, but not when you compare to garage sale prices (Yes I know that stores are incapable of selling that low, and I also realize that if no one bought new then there would be no people who bought new there would be no second hand items to buy used, so thank you if you buy new :). We ended up buying a lamp, a silicone fun shaped ice cube try, a bottle of sparkling juice, and a present for a family member. We visited Trader Joe because we heard that they had a lot of organic food for good prices. We don't usually buy organic food so I really should have priced organic food here, but I didn't see any prices that jumped out at me as superb. I am making my own baby food and have decided that I will buy the dirty dozen organic so I need to find a good source for those organic foods. While on the way to Trader Joe I noticed a Whole Foods. I had heard about Whole Foods on eMeals and I was curious so we stopped there too. We enjoyed the samples and seeing what they had, but once again the prices were too high for us. When I was researching the Ann Arbor area it seemed that the biggest tourist thing there is the University of Michigan. In addition to being a beautiful campus it also had several free museums that were open to the public. So we went there and walked around the campus a little bit and visited the art museum. It just so happened that the weekend we were there was the new student day on campus so we also got to hear a few snippets of tours. It was fun to see all of the new students and relive our early college days (although it did make parking a nightmare :) Other than that we mostly hung out at the hotel pool and relaxed in our room. Over all it was a good vacation.
Wonderful (not really) Surprise
When we came home from vacation we were unloading everything from the van and I heard this dripping noise. I followed it into the kitchen and found water streaming out of the cabinet under the sink and running all over the floor. I opened the cabinet and saw the pipe that runs to the dishwasher shooting water out against the side of the cabinet. I have to admit my first thought was to call Mr. Random to take care of it, but i am a (ex)contractor's daughter so I know a few things about home maintenance. I know that most pipes have a cut off valve in case of things like this. So I tried a couple and found the right one and shut off the water. Then I went out and told Mr. Random what happened (it is actually a good thing I found it first so I could prepare him because he is the one more likely to stress in the family). He went in the basement and said it looked like a rainforest down there. The water had leaked through the floor into the basement and was a couple inches deep down there.
How to Deal With Water Everywhere and Water Damage
We tried to sop up as much of the water as we could. We went through all the towels in the house in less than an hour. Mr Random took care of getting stuff out of the basement (we were storing a lot of cardboard boxes down there that were totally ruined, fortunately nothing expensive was ruined) and getting the water out down there. Unfortunately we keep our cat's stuff down there so he had to deal with dirty, cat litter/feces/food water. Mr. Random called my dad to come over and look at it to see what we needed to do. Dad said that in all his years in construction he had never seen a pipe just fall off like that. Somewhere along the line we got the idea that we needed to call our insurance company about this problem so I called them on Monday and found out that this was covered after the deductible. So we called Servepro out to look at it and see what needed to be done. They came out and said that the entire kitchen and bathroom floors need to be taken up and everything dried out then things would be put back together. They brought in two huge industrial dehumidifiers and two huge air movers (all of which are very noisy, fortunately it is a constant noise so it doesn't disturb Little Man too much, but still it is very noisy and you can't hear anything from one room to the next in our house) and which we were supposed to let run constantly. Well the first night they were running we noticed that it was starting to get rather warm. The Servepro guy had warned me that the dehumidifiers put out a lot of heat so we had had the air conditioner running. (long story short there is a leak in our air conditioner and the fluid was so low that the pipes froze solid and no air was blowing, but we didn't find that out until the next day when we paid an air conditioner company way too much to come figure out why it wasn't working, did you know air conditioning fluid costs $36 per lb?) So we had to leave them off for a day until we got the air conditioner fixed because it was almost 90 degrees with the dehumidifier running. So anyways when things got back on schedule and when we finished getting approval from the insurance company they started taking up the floor. Our house is 126 years old and apparently it is common just to put flooring over old flooring, not take it up first so there are 3 layers of flooring to get through before getting to the wood beams. And let me tell you that was one fun day with a baby because taking up a floor is noisy! We ended up hiding out in Mr. Random and I's bedroom with a play pen and a fan running for white noise and a movie for more noise. When it was time for Little Man's nap I put him down in the play pen and hid behind pillows so he wouldn't know I was there to work on my computer (the movie was playing on it so I couldn't go in the other room). So yeah, it was fun, but we made it through and Little Man did eventually fall asleep (after much fussing on and off). Little Man is a champion sleeper, if your baby isn't you might consider going elsewhere for this time. So anyways this has been big buckets of fun and it will continue to be for a couple more weeks. But on the plus side we are getting completely new flooring in the kitchen/dining room and bathroom and the back room of the basement. All we have to pay is our $500 deductible and we will actually get some money back because we will get paid for the time we spent drying and moving things and the extra on the electrical bill.
So what do you do when you have a bunch of water where it shouldn't be?
The bathroom is torn up to the floorboards which are also going to be replaced. The vanity was damaged so they cut it apart to remove it. The freezer that was in there is in the dining room. I'm not sure where the toilet is currently.

All we have to pay is our $500 deductible and we will actually get some money back because we will get paid for the time we spent drying and moving things and the extra on the electrical bill.
So what do you do when you have a bunch of water where it shouldn't be?
- Sop up what you can
- Call your insurance company
- Call a water damage restoration company if recomended to
- Go from there with what they say
- Keep track of all hours you spend doing anything that a company might do such as moving things, sopping stuff, etc.
The kitchen - the fridge has been moved into the dining room, the stuff from the counters is in another room, the big green box by the stove is the dehumidifier, the two littler green things are the air movers. The floor is torn up to 1 layer of flooring on top of the wood beams in the center.
You can see the different layers of flooring. The bottom one is an ugly green tile from the 50s. Next is an ugly sparly vinyl from the 80s, then the particle board that was under the current vinyl (which is completely gone)
Another view of the kitchen. The offending dishwasher pipe is not fixed yet so we are using mostly disposable dishes. And they brought a second air mover for upstairs because it wasn't drying fast enough.
The basement. Another dehumidifier and air mover. In the back left corner you can see the back room, that is where the floor will be replaced downstairs. Mr. Random is excited about that because he was planning to redo that room this winter and now we gt the floor replaced for free (we consider most of this free because we passed the deductible with just a portion of the drying cost)
Fun stuff right? :) Well on to the linky party!

Favorite Recipes:
A Little Nosh linked up these Flour less Squash Brownies that look sooo good. I am on the lookout for healthier alternatives for desserts so I can still have some occasionally without feeling bad. Also my in-laws are Gluten Free so it is nice to have a good recipe up my sleeve for taking to their house.

I couldn't pick between these two, so you get to see both of them :)
Mommy's Sweet Confessions linked up a baked doghnut recipe that looks absolutely wonderful! I personally will probably make it without the spices and gingerbread glaze because I am not a super huge fan of that flavoring, but it sounds great for a healthier doughnut recipe especially with a regular glaze, powder sugar (my fav :) or even her yummy looking maple glaze!

One Creative Mommy linked up this Paint Can Pinata tutorial that looks like a lot of fun and is so detailed that it looks easily doable! I also love her other Art Party posts (doesn't an art themed party sound like so much fun? I would have loved that as a kid!). Her paint easel cookies definitely deserve an honorable mention. So Cute!
Favorite Inspirational Post:
Again I couldn't pick so you get to see two great posts!
Healthy Branscoms linked up their post about How they Paid off $39,000 in 13 months. That is a lot of money! And the money they are saving will be so nice for them in the future. Mr. Random and I did a similar program (we did Dave Ramesy's program) and are currently debt free (minus the house), but we did not have a lot of debt going into it. I am always inspired by people who had a lot more debt and get it paid off that fast. Congratulations Branscoms on being debt free!
The Domesticated Princess shared her post Confessions of a Confused Mother. It is an amazing, very open post about how she is dealing with parenting her preteen son through a difficult summer. Thank you Bonny for being so open and sharing your struggles! Little Man is just a baby, but someday he will be a preteen, and it is nice to know in advance that there are others who struggle too.
Favorite Other/Random Post:
Practically Functional linked up these Cat Shelves which are just too cute and fun for words! My cat would absolutely love them! Jessi has been trying to convince my to add them to Mr. Random's to do list :)
Well go on over and check out all these awesome posts!
